Summary of Internship

The intern for the National Geographic Archives will gain valuable hands-on experience in a nonprofit archival collection containing material dating back to the Society’s founding. The Archives Intern will work with documents and photographs related to scientific exploration, educational outreach, publishing, and more. The breadth of tasks will support the day-to-day operations of the archive and gain skills working with employees in many other departments.

Five Principal Learning Responsibilities

  1. Learn to organize, arrange, and catalog physical archival materials, including documents and related items (25%)
  2. Gain experience in physical photographic storage, working with National Geographic’s classic black and white print collection to re-house materials in appropriate archival housing (25%)
  3. Create and curate digital resources and enhance digital collections (20%)
  4. Help modernize and expand a digital timeline of the Society’s history (15%)
  5. Assist in researching, organizing, and assessing collections within the document or photo archive in order to highlight their historical or educational value (15%)

Related Field of Study Required

Applicant should be currently pursuing graduate level work in archival collections management, library science, or related field.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills.
  • Familiarity with archival practices, handling archival objects, digital collections, and cataloging
  • Enthusiasm and an interest in the Society’s mission, products, and events


Candidate must be enrolled at an accredited College or University at the time of application.

Internship Program Start and End Dates

  • Start Date: Monday, June 5, 2017
  • End Date: Friday, August 11, 2017
