Discover and Connect

October is American Archives Month, a time to focus on the importance of the Smithsonian’s vast collections of archival and historical records, totaling circa 137,000 cubic feet. The Smithsonian invites the public and our colleagues to discover and connect to digital images and videos from our collections, exhibitions of our collections, blogs about our collections, and a Facebook Q&A about how to care for collections and archival work in general.  A full calendar of events is available online. Share what’s happening on Twitter with #archivesmonth.

  • The Smithsonian Collections Blog celebrates American Archives Month with a month-long blogathon! Take a behind the scenes look at how archival resources support exhibitions or how archivists make connections and discover new collections in the field, or just read about a small sampling from the Smithsonian’s archival collections. New content is posted almost every weekday.
  • Discover a wide variety of digital content from the collections of the Archives of American Art, Archives of American Gardens, Smithsonian Institution Archives, Biodiversity Heritage Library, and other SI archives on the Smithsonian Archives Month Pinterest Board.
  • Connect to a home movie and discover other digitized video recordings on the Smithsonian AV Archivists Tumblr site.
  • Discover new and changing digital content and become a Smithsonian Digital Volunteer archivist for the SI Transcription Center to help us transcribe archival documents from our collections!  Connect to natural history field books, the diaries of Joseph Henry, the first Secretary of the Smithsonian, or the Native/American and American/Native language dictionary of the Alabama Native American peoples – a language spoken by less than 100 individuals today.
  • Connect with the Smithsonian archivists on the Facebook Ask the Smithsonian Archivist day.  On October 27th, archivists from around the SI will be on hand to virtually answer questions about caring for personal archives.
  • Discover even more about the Smithsonian’s vast archival resources here.
